The Story of my Car: I found this off the side of the road in Brooksville. Bought, it, fixed it over 3 weekends, drove it home. It was originally to tide me over because I was selling my bus and I have a fastback projects that isn't ready yet (typical VW owner nonsense, I know) OS I needed a car to drive in the interim. Well, now that I didn't sell my bus, its another car I don't need. I don't have time or energy to finish making it as good as I would like, plus I realized that time spent on the 4 is time away from the Type 3 fastback in the backyard. Plus with a Baby 2 months away, Its time for it to go. I'll tell you the truth- I never fell in love with it- Its a smoooooth car, great ride, huge comfy seats, auto, air(not that it works) and really confy- And maybe its those very facts that make it not as 'VW-y' to me. Love the engine and all that Jazz, but all in all I don't need it. Here's a breakdown of where it is mechanically-: Engine- runs great, runs strong, but havn't done much aside fromm basic oil-changin tune ups. FI is intact but needs some mild tinkering (idle's high after its warm, stuff like that) Needs a new muffler- its incredible what a 1 inch hole and loose baffle can sound like. Rust- Almost completely rust free (its awe inspiring!) with one notable exception- the battery tray is almost GONE. I have (ahem) fabricated a temporary functional replacemnt Not a big deal- but just wanted to tell you. Its under the drivers seat, BTW. Type 4s. Go figure. Other Stuff- Tranny works fine, all the gas-electric heater stuff is there but I haven't felt the need to play with it. Yeah, its cool, but its also Florida. AC is missing compressor- otherwise its fine. Carpet and door panels are great, tires okay- It did have a bent rim up fronmt that caused a 50 mph wobble- replaced the rim last week but haven't taken her out. Oh, one amusing quirk- occasionally, as far as I can tell, it will randomly deside to suck a bit of tranny fluid through the vacumm modulator diaphram. No effect on performace, but does cause incredible, dramatic amounts of James-Bond caliber smoke. Email me with questions or offers or whatever: rjl@inertia.org |
